SPRING 2021: BRIDGERTON INSPIRED

If you haven’t seen the Netflix original series Bridgerton yet, trust me, you are one of the few. In just a couple weeks after its initial release, the series smashed the record for the most-watched show in Netflix history. The record was no surprise to the show’s viewers, who were swept away by the aesthetically pleasing views, the hot sex scenes, and most importantly, the incredible outfits. Although taking place in London during the Regency era, Bridgerton’s creators took several creative liberties to make the show appeal to a modern audience. The contemporary twists include the diverse cast, classical covers of pop songs, and non-traditional costume design. If you haven’t seen it, please stop reading, grab a bottle of rosé, and turn on Netflix (like right now). While the show may leave you wishing for a dreamy British man to sweep you off your feet, it also provides major inspiration for your 2021 spring wardrobe.

When I first turned on Bridgerton, I was immediately transfixed by the immaculate color scheme. The large Bridgerton family consistently dons simple, dusty pastel tones that compliment the family’s elegant nature. But, Daphne Bridgerton manages to turn these seemingly boring colors into looks that capture the eye (impressive, to say the least). And I’m not the only fan; these light tones of pink, canary yellow, sky blue are filling up stores everywhere. From House of Sunny to Zara, brands have embraced this soft coloring for their spring and summer lines. But, if you are not one for pastels, do not fret: Bridgerton offers more than one color scheme. In contrast to the simple Bridgerton family, the Featherington family across the street embodies the maximalist in all of us. Shockingly vibrant colors paired with loud floral prints inspire everyone to have fun with their wardrobe. After all, this year has been, well, shit. So why not cheer yourself up with looks that exude happiness? You deserve it (even if your credit card says you don’t).

Although the colors palettes may differ between families, their silhouettes remain the same. And yes, I know what you’re thinking: aren’t they from the 1800s? But, the costume designer, Ellen Mirojnick, still manages to make the time period sexy. I give credit to the necklines, which are a low scoop cut. If you know me, then you know I will never shy away from showing some cleavage. Neither will the rest of my generation, apparent with the recent trend of corsets. They may not be visible underneath the actresses’ straight-cut dresses, but corsets not only give your chest a fantastic pick-me-up but also provide the subtle confidence of knowing you look f*cking fantastic. You can buy your essential corset for this summer on ASOS, Revolve, or at your local thrift store. If you are a New Yorker like me, I found mine at Search and Destroy on St. Marks for just $38 (totally worth it).

The necklines pair perfectly with the short, simple necklaces worn by Daphne. Together, they highlight her collarbones perfectly. Without showing a ton of skin, Bridgerton accentuates the natural beauty of the cast. My favorite aspect of the dresses on screen is not the neckline but the sleeves. An oversized sleeve adds an empowering and dramatic effect to any look. In fact, Vogue named voluminous sleeves one of their 2021 spring fashion trends to look out for (I’m not making shit up). So this spring, turn on this spotify playlist inspired by the series, throw on a bright, poofy sleeved dress, and embrace the Bridgerton style. You will feel like royalty.
