CONFESSIONS OF A BAGAHOLIC

Accessories are essential to any outfit. Whether it’s topping off a dress with a simple necklace or wearing sparkling socks to contrast your beat-up sneakers, they make every look a little more special. So how can I be writing about fashion without mentioning my favorite accessory, one that is often not thought about, and too frequently overlooked: the bag. And no, I’m not talking about your designer bag that you swing out of your closet almost every time you go out. I’m talking about your unique bags, the ones that you dust off to perfectly accentuate your outfit. Some may be shoeaholics (@ Carrie Bradshaw), but I am a bagaholic.

I am honestly embarrassed to say how many bags I have in my closet. From all shapes and sizes, bags can be worn with every outfit in their own way. But, having a day-to-day bag is essential; not every purse you own needs to be a showstopper. While shopping in Lille, France, I bought my go-to bag for 20 Euros at Stradivarius. Practicality is key for your everyday purse, so when shopping for one, I suggest keeping the typical items you carry in mind. In my purse, you can almost always find my wallet, lip gloss, chapstick, camera, extra hair ties, perfume, and sometimes a quick snack. So yes, my bag might have to be bigger than others, but everyone’s needs are different (I obviously carry a lot of shit). Regardless of size, there is no better feeling than picking out the perfect bag to go with your killer outfit. It doesn’t matter if it’s extra-large, or super petite - your bag will add one more dimension to your look. And after all, bags don’t need to be totally practical, proven by Lizzo’s incredibly tiny handbag worn on the red carpet.

Even though Lizzo’s groundbreaking bag was designer, yours does not have to be to have an equally jaw-dropping effect. I have found my most unique (& favorite) bags at thrift or vintage stores. In most cases, they are  the ideal places to find a purse that no one else has, without breaking the bank. So check out your local thrift stores. If you are in Glen Ellyn, then go to the Bountiful Barn downtown, where I find my most eccentric bags. The owner often finds them in the flea markets of Paris (so on-brand for me). Or, if you have a cool mom like me, look through her old ones. What comes around goes around in the fashion world! Bags can last forever, and when I say forever, I mean it. And if you are sick of your old bags? My trick is to tie a scarf around the strap to make it feel new again.

If you are feeling creative, then paint your bag! By doing so, it becomes your own, and a personal signature on your accessory. If you are new to painting, just splatter paint TF out of it. Carrie Bradshaw’s bag in The Carrie Diaries is super cute, and so easy to make for beginners. If you are more experienced, try something more out there! Paint some butterflies, or your favorite logo (do whatever the f*ck you want). Just put on some good music and see what comes to you.

As a way to give back to all of you, I painted two bags for a giveaway. All of my readers’ support means the world to me, so check out Instagram for the contest! Love you all, and until next time, bisous <3!
