SIMPLE BLISS
Featured Closet: Liz Hughes
Liz Hughes’s closet, in her own words, may be boring at first glance. But, in my opinion, the way Liz styles her items is what makes her outfits so well done. The art of accessorizing on top of a simple fit is an art form that she has mastered quite well. While sitting on her white, fluffy bed and chatting, I learned about Liz’s fashion preferences, and her tips and tricks for an effortless look.
In Liz’s closet, there is an abundance of basics: jeans, plain crop tops, simple gold necklaces, etc. She owns three pairs of the same Aritzia jeans because she wears them so often. And yes, they are the same shade. She swears on Aritzia’s new in-house brand of denim. They are more affordable than Mother or Citizen (not saying much) but still high quality. Hence, the three pairs. But, it’s these basics she believes creates a strong impression. She explains, “My clothes aren’t crazy out there, but I think that you can make more of a statement with a simple outfit done really well. I don’t think you have to wear crazy items, or expensive, crazy prints. I like plain.”
In contrast to the last Featured Closet, Emma Funk, Liz instead lives by the motto “less is more.” But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love an accent piece to spice up her outfit. And where does she find them? Zara, or even Zara Kids (yes, you read that right). Since Zara is on a lower price point, it is her preferred option to stay with current trends without spending too much money. After all, trends can come and go with the snap of Anna Wintour’s fingers. But style, and one’s talent forstyle, lasts for-f*cking-ever. So yes, Zara is the perfect place for trends, with bold colors and different prints for every season. And when Liz finds something at Zara Kids, she feels fantastic knowing no one else will have it. It’s a great “F*ck You” moment accompanied by a sweet smile on her face.
And regarding this summer’s trends? Liz has strong opinions. Tie-Dye? Not special. Biker shorts? Absolutely hate. The latter is somewhat ironic (sorry Liz!) due to her favorite fashion inspo: the model-off-duty look. Whether it’s Kendall Jenner or Hailey Bieber walking down the streets grabbing coffee, their casual “streetwear” has an effortless vibe. it makes a statement, yet the outfits are usually so simple. It’s natural and humanizes models for a slight moment. On a more positive note, one trend that Liz actually likes is the new wave of frilly, ultra-femme dresses. When she confessed this , I immediately thought of LoveShackFancy. Even though they are rare in her closet, a fun, mini dress is always a good move.
For Liz, there is one thing that will permanently remain in her closet: sneakers. Specifically, her white and green Stan Smith sneakers. She wears them almost every day, without fail. In fact, I have never gone a day without seeing Liz sporting them, and we have been friends for nearly five years. They are classic and surely will stay in style for a while. One day, Liz hopes to turn her sneakers into a Golden Goose collection. Don’t we all.
Along with her sneakers, her go-to outfit is a pair of jeans, a solid-colored cropped t-shirt, large, stacked earrings, and the necklaces that she wears every day. If the shirts aren’t cropped? No worries. Just tuck it underneath your bra. I’ve tried this (apprehensively at first), and it turned out to be one of the greatest, yet easiest hacks I’ve ever attempted. And the earrings? Bold is fantastic to Liz, as they complement her eyes. Topping off her look with natural make-up, including bronzer as eyeshadow, Liz is set for her everyday look. Her closet teaches us that it’s okay to go simple sometimes. In the midst of chaos, it can perhaps be what stands out the most.
